- Lab Order Update - Changes to Duplicate Orders Alert
The Duplicate Alert tool is designed to help prescribers in the ambulatory setting avoid unnecessary lab test orders by flagging potential duplicates based on specific criteria. Effective October 21, 2025, enhancements to the tool mean duplicate alerts will now trigger when placing lab orders only when:
- The same test is ordered;
- The order status matches (future vs. standing); and
- The expected or completed dates fall within a 14-day window.
As a result, prescribers should see fewer duplicate alerts than before. Examples:
- If there is an existing future order and a new future order is placed with an expected date more than 14 days in the future, a duplicate alert will no longer appear. A duplicate alert will continue to appear if the new order is within 14 days.
- If there is an existing future order and a standing order is placed, a duplicate alert will not appear.
- If there is an existing standing order and a future order is placed, a duplicate alert will not appear.
The functions of the buttons within the "Potential Duplicate Orders Found" pop-up will remain the same (click the camera icon for a screenshot).
